Calabria is an extraordinary and scenic corner of Italy that is virtually unknown to the British traveller. The craggy mountains and rugged coastline create a mysterious landscape, and a place where cultures meet and blend seamlessly. Some villages here are still decidedly Greek, with their own culture, festivals and attitude. Others have a strong Albanian influence, and even the French and Spanish have left their mark here. The area gave its name to the entire Italian peninsula because "Italia" was infact Calabria's original name in honour of its king, Italo.

Calabria's artistic heritage stands amongst the richest in Italy thanks to its buildings, churches, castles, archaeological areas, sculptures and paintings from every age. The region also boasts a versatile handicraft tradition from wood-carving to pottery, goldsmiths to weavers and wrought iron to stonework.

There is also a natural beauty to be found in this region, not only in the 800km of coastline lined with beautiful beaches and clear-blue sea, but also in the wilder mountainous areas. There are enchanting gorges and rare species of trees such as Loricate pine, beautiful lakes, thick woods, lush vegetation and, below the mountainous areas, are the plains dotted with citrus orchards and olive groves.

The Calabrese people are fiery and warm, open and welcoming. Traditionally hospitable and eager to share the beauty of the region they live in, you will find yourself making friends easily and quickly - and you won't want to leave.

Calabria may be one of Italy's least famous regions, but the toe of Italy has played a large part in Italian culture. The famous tarantella dance originated in Calabria and famous Calabrians include the late fashion designer Gianni Versace and Charles Atlas.
